As reported by Wine Spectator, “One of Italy’s most successful winemaking families adds Brunello di Montalcino to its portfolio. The Cotarella family, owners of the Falesco winery in Umbria, will soon be making Brunello di Montalcino. The family has purchased Le Macioche in Montalcino for $4.78 million, Wine Spectator has learned. The 17-acre property includes 7.4 acres of Brunello di Montalcino, 1.2 acres of vines classified for IGT wines, and an additional 5 acres suitable for planting.
The Cotarellas are one of Italy’s better-known wine families. Falesco was founded by brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella in 1979. Riccardo is one of Italy’s most famous consulting enologists. Renzo is longtime CEO and chief winemaker for Antinori. In recent years, Riccardo’s daughters, Dominga and Marta, and Renzo’s daughter, Enrica, have joined the family business.
“It has been almost one year that we wanted to have a estate in a unique place,” Dominga told Wine Spectator. “The estate really presents nice potential because we are at 1,400 feet and most of the vineyards have southwest and southeast aspects.”
